Banksia Bulletin Editorial May 2016

​I consulted Google for a little bit of #inspo before hitting the keys for this month’s ‘From the Editor’ and believe it or not, I learnt a thing or two!  Turns out the month of May was named after the Roman goddess Maia, who oversaw the growth of plants. A cruise down Hayes Road and a gander at Squiers’ clover says she’s doing her job pretty well! Which ever myth good omen you believe, we wish you a fruitful growing season ahead.
 
We’ve kept busy over the past few weeks with various activities (such as School Holiday Crafts with funding thanks to National Youth Week) and lots of plotting and planning for the next twelve months ahead!
 
We’ve got a few big dates locked away…
· Community Campout* on Friday 13th May (see cover page)
· National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday 25th May (page 9)
· 30 Under 30 Youth Forum (with the Shire of Quairading) on Friday 17th June, keep an eye out for the survey in the next few weeks
· End of Financial Year Sundowner on Thursday 23rd June
· Women in Ag Day on Thursday 30th June (page 11)
· Spring Fling Garden Day on Friday 28th October with very special guest, Sabrina Hahn! (page 12-13)
· Yowzer!
 
May also sees the return of Movie Afternoons! The first screening will be ‘This Is Where I Leave You’ on Thursday 5th May, full details can be found on page 7.
 
*word on the street is, caravan bays are selling like hot cakes for the Community Campout! Contact the Shire ASAP to book your site for the night, it’s going to be a good one.
 
We have 31 keen tippers in our Footy Tipping Competition this year, with mere points separating the top few (and bottom few, but that’s neither here nor there is it?). The profits from this year’s competition will be going to the Quairading Youth Centre for a desperately needed air conditioning unit. It’s not too late for you to get involved, just go to www.footytipping.net.au/quairading to sign up! The Tippers Ladder can be found on page 15.
 
We’ve also very recently started a book exchange. It’s called the ‘Little Library’ and you’re all welcome to come in a take a book, leave a book or make a donation.
 
Finally, massive ups to the Quairading Bulls for their first away win in quite a while, getting up on Federals last weekend. Be sure to peruse The Bull-etin (footy notes) on page 47. We’re keen and ready to report on lots of wins from all local sports this winter!
